The freezer check list that resides on the fridge door, had become a mess of incorrect items. Off we trundled to the outside freezer first, checked and chucked away just a few items of way outdated fruit juice. Ah well, can't be on top all the time.
Indoor freezer received the same check, no throwing away in here, now we are up to date. There are still a few winter meals inside that can be used up on cooler days - again, this is a screen shot so a little blurred - hope you can read it:
I kept out half a bag of our own blackcurrants from last year (painstakingly picked a few at a time and frozen), plus a bag of our rhubarb (which this year seems on strike). Once thawed, they were weighed and had equal amounts of sugar added to them to make blackcurrant and rhubarb jam.
Here they are in the pan, sugar slowly dissolving:
It took twice as long to set as normal, due to rhubarb being low on pectin. I had added quite a lot of lemon juice, which has made it quite tart but we like jam that way. Finally, it set, and here it is, so dark you can't even see through it!:
Look at those bedraggled hydrangea's in the background:)
I love your freezer lists, next week I am going through the freezer and the cupboards , so I know how much I really have, time to be a bit more organised.
ReplyDeleteI love lists. Think my life without them might be chaos:)
DeleteThank you for the reminder that I need to do a freezer list soon, before I get too much new fruit in and then have to move everything a dozen times to find things.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. It is so busy this time of year isn't it?
DeleteI'll be quite glad when jam season finishes and that's before the blackberries are ready lol
ReplyDeleteChutney is my must make this year as we have run out! I like to make fruit based ones plus get things in for cakes and puddings.
DeleteI love how organised you are with your freezer lists, I keep trying with this but after a few weeks fail miserably, I do usually have a good idea whats in ours but sometimes things slip through the net and get thrown out. We still have plenty jam in stock but no chutney, it gets used much quicker than the jam., I need to make double quantity this year.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time I keep it correct, I get very annoyed if I don't. Same here with chutney.
DeleteYou are so organised, you put me to shame :( but you have inspired me to make jam this week xxx
ReplyDeleteI don't work though so that makes a difference. Mind you , I have always been a list maker.
DeleteRhubarb is a very heavy feeder - try giving it a really good composting in the fall and then in the spring.
ReplyDeleteI m afraid I dont keep freezer lists; I just rummage !
When I've cleared out my fruit cage in September I shall move it into there and enrich the soil.
